The Wendover Productions made a wonderful video explaining why the cities are located where they are. The location of cities is largely influenced by the climate and geography.
Here are the criteria for an ideal city:
- The city should be in the northern hemisphere.
- The city should be within about 100 miles from the sea on a navigable river. This is mainly because water transportation is still cheaper than any other mode of transportation.
- The city needs to have access to resources like minerals. So, it needs to be located near a mineral rich mountain.
Considering all these criteria, the best place for a city in the whole world is Dhaka, Bangladesh. No wonder, it is one of the most densely populated cities in the whole world.
