An incredible thing is happening in the social media right now. People are dumping ice cold water on them for raising awareness for a disease called ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). From Wikipedia:
ALS is characterised by muscle spasticity, rapidly progressive weakness due to muscle atrophy, difficulty in speaking (dysarthria), swallowing (dysphagia), and breathing (dyspnea).
ALS is not contagious. The disorder causes muscle weakness and patients ultimately lose the ability to control all voluntary movements. In final stages, difficulties in chewing and swallowing take place. Thus eating and drinking become very very difficult. Every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with ALS and another one dies. Living with ALS is very expensive and can cost more than $200,000 per year. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages about two to five years from the time of diagnosis.
The idea of the ice bucket challenge came from former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2012. Together with Pat Quinn, who was also an ALS patient, the pair began to challenge their social network friends to take the challenge of pouring a bucket of ice. And now Zuckerberg and Justin Timberlake are doing this. According to ALS association, between July 29 and August 12 they have received an $4 million in donations.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge works like this:
Here is the cool video of Mark Zuckerberg taking the challange..
Later Bill Gates accepted the challenge..
Sheryl Sandberg accepted Zuckerberg’s challenge too and here is the video..
Here is the video of Governor Chris Christie where he challenged Zuckerberg..
Here is Justin Timberlake’s video of accepting the challenge..
This is the video from Dan Quinn, Pat Quinn’s brother..
And finally an epic one from Paul Bissonnette, a Canadian professional ice hockey player..
